What Makes A Good Doctor ? >>

Scientist systemically studied the view of doctors and non-physicians regarding the qualities and attributes of an ideal physician by compiling a list of characteristics of good doctor from a Medicine search and from opinions generated by three focus (medical school academic, general practitioners and non-medical professionals).

          The was qualitatively  categorised info five domains;

1. Cognitive (e.g. knowledge/skill, intelligence, thinking and decision making)

 2. Conative (e.g. drive and motivation).

3. Emotional(e.g. sensitivity and stability).

4. Interpersonal (e.g. personality, teamwork and communication skills)

         The public regarding being knowledgeable and keeping up-to-data most important; physicians regarded being honest and responsible and trustworthy as the two most important items. The public rated cognitive qualities most highly; the ethical domain was most important to doctors. Healthcare consumers were significially more concerned than doctors about domains of emotional regulation and communication.

              The scientist concluded that medical education should inculcate the values and qualities desired by both the medical profession and the public . Basic medical knowledge and reasoning are of prime importance; moral-ethical issues and communication skills should also be emphasized. Selection criteria for admission to medical school also consider humanistic, on-cognitive traits. As the researchers rightly polonted out, the ultimate goal of medical education should be to produce the 'good doctor' -someone who is able to provide excellent medical care to patients under his care However, the concept of what constitute a good doctor has remained nebulous ill defined . Although the medical profession has always espoused a set of noble values, as represented by the Hippocratic Oath, there has however , been little effort to systematically study the same and hence this study is quite unique and can significantly contribute to enhance patient satisfaction and influencing values and standards to be adopted by the medical profession and setting up of education and make it accountable. A medical degree is considered a privilege and governments spend substantial amount of money on the subsidies, etc. to produce a 'good doctor'.
